In 1967 the Manchester Road Race, with more than 200 runners was the second largest race in the country. The Boston Marathon was the only race that had more participants. While small by today's standards, this made the Manchester race very big for the time. Participation grew steadily to 1976, when it broke 1,000.
Just ten years later the race was attracting more than 6,000 runners. By 1994, it topped 10,000 runners and in the year 2000, there were 11,561 registered racers. In 2010, participation was capped at 15,000 runners. The Manchester Road Race has grown to be the largest race in Connecticut, the third largest in New England and in the top 25 largest distance races in the country.
