Manchester Road Race Safety Update
(Scroll to see complete message)
The Manchester Road Race Committee, in consultation with the Town of Manchester, continues to plan for an exciting on-site road race on Thanksgiving Day at 10 a.m.
The health and safety of all our runners, volunteers and spectators remains our foremost concern! In order to make our return to Main Street as safe as it can possibly be, the Committee strongly urges that everyone participating in the race (including athletes, volunteers and fans) be fully vaccinated.
Additionally, we have mandated that all of our elite runners, many of whom are coming here from out of state, provide proof of full vaccination.
In collaboration with the Connecticut Department of Public Health and the Griffin Hospital Community Outreach Mobile Vaccination Team, the MRR will sponsor two walk-in Covid-19 vaccination clinics prior to the road race.
These clinics are free, open to everyone.
WHEN:
Saturday, October 16 – 9:00 am – 2:00 pm
Saturday, November 6 – 9:00 am – 2:00 pm
The clinicians will offer the Johnson & Johnson, Moderna and Pfizer vaccines. Full vaccination is achieved with one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The other two require two shots administered within a specified period of time. The three week period between clinics will permit people using the Pfizer vaccine to get both shots.
WHERE:
Manchester High School Cafeteria
Visitors should use the parking lot accessible from Brookfield Street (by the athletic fields). Look for the bright yellow mobile vaccine van.
INCENTIVES:
To encourage the participation of unvaccinated people, anyone getting their initial vaccination will receive a $20 Stop & Shop gift certificate.
PROCEDURES:
Anyone aged 12 or older is eligible for the vaccine. You do not have to be a participant in the road race or a Manchester resident to receive the vaccine.
Additionally those who are eligible can get a booster shot.
All staff, volunteers and visitors will wear face masks while inside the school facility.
Vaccinations will be administered free. Individuals are encouraged to bring their health insurance card and photo ID if they have them. However, it is not necessary to have health insurance or a state-issued ID to receive the vaccine. No one will be turned away for lack of insurance or ID.
Further information about the COVID-19 vaccines, their safety and effectiveness can be found at the Griffin Hospital’s website.
Currently, the Town of Manchester requires that facial coverings be worn at all indoor events. The MRR will comply fully with that mandate. Masks must be worn at all of the MRR’s indoor events, and on the shuttle buses transporting runners and spectators to the race on Thanksgiving morning.
Because masks cannot be worn while eating, and due to the health concerns about holding indoor events in confined or crowded places, the MRR has canceled its pre-race Spaghetti Supper and Charlie Robbins Luncheon this year.
Additionally, although not legally required outdoors, we are urging everyone --- runners, volunteers, and spectators --- to exercise sound judgment and respect for others by wearing facial coverings and following social distancing protocols as much as possible at the road race and its associated events.
The Manchester Road Race is a wonderful holiday tradition. You can help us to keep it a safe, healthy and fun event for everyone and by being fully vaccinated, and by cooperating with these suggestions.
